Went to Washington last week to cover a conference. Picked up a cold while I was there and I'm still struggling with it. Went to the doctor last Thursday and he said it's just a cold, take some sudafed and vitamin C. I did and I was feeling better by the weekend but then it came roaring back on Monday. Starting to feel better again but still have some nasal congestion. Wheee. Hopefully by the weekend I'll be recovered. |

Down about 12 pounds since I saw the doctor on June 25. Go me! I've been hitting the gym at least three days a week. I do at least half an hour of cardio (elliptical, treadmill, stairmaster or some combo of the three) and typically burn about 550 calories in a half hour.
Being Jewish is not conducive to healthy eating, especially during the holidays. Shabbat meals are also hard to resist and tend to be large and meaty. Delicious, yes, but also not so healthy. Yesterday, for example, big kiddush at shul with mini hotdogs, cholent (think a combo of stew and chili) big cake, caesar salad, meatballs, lamb meatballs.... THEN I went to lunch. I managed to restrain myself to mostly salads during lunch. But then there was dessert and my hosts and I played board games all afternoon, which included lots of snacking on chips and salsa, and cookies.
Anyway...I'm working on the dieting thing.
I'm leaving for Israel tomorrow. Going on a Nefesh B'Nefesh flight to interview new olim (immigrants). Yes, they are paying for the round trip. Then I'm staying with my cousins in Modiin until Saturday night when I check into a hotel in Tel Aviv until Monday. My return flight is at 0005 on Tuesday. On Wednesday I'm meeting up with some friends from Teaneck who recently made aliyah. Not sure about the rest of the time. I may go to Sderot on Monday and do some interviews there, comparing the relative calm now to what it was like when I was there a year ago when rockets were falling randomly on the city. I'll be updating my status on Twitter (TheBigLipowsky) and Facebook. Hopefully I'll be spending lots of time on the beach and just relaxing. I need a vacation. I've taken long weekends but I really haven't taken a long vacation since I've been at the Standard. Yes, I've been to Israel every year but it's always been working trips, interviewing and following people around with activity packed days starting early and ending late. So I haven't had a real vacation. This is pure vacation - although I got the idea to visit Sderot and may interrupt for that, but that won't be too bad.
Anyway, I better get back to packing and it looks like I'll have to stop by Radio Shack because I can't find my electrical adapter. |

I have seen a lot of shit in my day. And I do mean A LOT.
But now, after seeing this video, words fail me. Watch to the end if you can without it inducing a seizure.

| This week in journalism |

This is what I spent the week before Simchat Torah working on. It was not an easy article to write and I can only imagine what the parents are going through. It wasn't one of my favorite moments as a journalists. I went to the funeral and heard the parents speak, rabbis speak, the brother speak. When putting the article together I purposely avoided calling the parents. The Record, the local daily, did not make the same judgment call and apparently showed up on the parents' doorstep the day after the accident. I think I did a good job with it, even though I know I could have made it a better article with one more day to polish it (such is the life of deadline reporting). But I hate these types of stories. I've covered a few funerals, but this is the second one I've had to do about the death of children.
Anyway, I posted a new entry in my blog today about JDate. It's funny. Funny is good. |

Last night I made an Indian lamb curry that was fantastic. I rooted through a bunch of my cookbooks to find a recipe but didn't have all the ingredients for any specific one. So I created my own. I cooked the lamb in garlic, then set it aside. Then I used nondairy cream as my base and added indian curry powder, garlic, tumeric, mint, and cumin. I also made basmati rice in my new rice cooker. My old rice cooker died a few weeks ago. I got this at ShopRite last week thinking it was the same model. It wasn't. It didn't include the steamer that my old rice cooker had. I was thinking about returning it or trying to win a new one at Dave&Busters where I had gotten the first one. Well, D&B had the same model I had bought and it would have been a lot more expensive to get it there (winning enough tickets). So I decided to keep the one i bought. I used it for the first time last night and I am in love with this rice cooker. I never used the steamer anyway. I was going to use it for the first time in two years when it died two weeks ago. So why do I love this new model so much more? IT'S NONSTICK!! That's right. Whereas I would always have to soak the old pot to get rid of the remaining rice on the bottom and then scrape it off into the garbage, nothing stuck to this new one. So much easier and the rice was just as tasty.
Now I have to remember this recipe so I can repeat it and next time get some bread. I'm also thinking of using real dairy next time and just putting veggies in, potatoes, cauliflower, brocolli, carrots etc. |

The Jewish Standard is launching a new Website tomorrow and I'll be blogging. So, I need a new creative name for my blog. Any suggestions? The boss doesn't like "The Semitic Stallion." And I don't think I can get away with "The Bullshitter Rebbe."
This blog will remain up but I'll probably post more of the interesting stuff over there. I'll link tomorrow when it goes live. |
